While most folks think California’s warm weather season is the time to hit the water, the natives know that the real fishing season here starts after the labor day holiday. Our “Fall” is the time period that starts about now will continue until the first winter storms in late November. Mother Nature offers up mild weather, perfect water temperatures, a decrease in boat traffic and less pressure on the fish. If I look back at my journals, most of the best fishing days of the year are in late September through late November. Where should we go? Inshore water temps drop to a level where bay dwelling species like spotted bay bass and halibut come out of their sluggish state to annihilate flies, plastics or hard baits. Nice tidal flows offer easy drifts using light lines. I have already been watching my fish counts rise over the last couple weeks with nice mixed bag days consisting of spotted bay bass, calico bass, sand bass and even a few small barracuda. There are also bonito making a showing within striking distance of launch spots. There is a lot of fun to be had out there right now.
